Sarah Zarba is a rising 2L at CUNY Law and formerly incarcerated abolitionist. Sarah’s passion for taking down the criminal legal system is driven by her own personal experience of being incarcerated. After bearing witness to many years of human rights abuses taking place behind bars, Sarah has spent the last 10 years since her release contributing to grassroots and systems-level advocacy with the goal of abolishing prisons. As part of this work, she’s organized for the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls (NCIFIWG) in its early days, served as a 2016 Beyond the Bars Fellow at Columbia University, and co-lead a successful student campaign to remove the conviction question from Columbia University’s admissions application. Sarah is a master’s level social worker and presently works on bail advocacy at the Legal Aid Society for women detained pretrial at Rikers Island. As a 1L, Sarah joined the Executive Board of the Formerly Incarcerated Law Student Advocacy Association (FILSAA) and the Center for Diversity team and is eager to advocate for other formerly incarcerated people on their law school journey, and after, as they prepare for character and fitness.
